They were returned to DWM, and subsequently marked with the Chilean crest for inclusion in one of the Chilean contract orders. In 1896 the company consolidated its arms manufacturing, and founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken, the famous D.W.M. But this is one of the last batch of O.V.S.-marked rifles that were intercepted by the British in 1899. This is a very nice Model 1895 Chilean Mauser Carbine, made by the renowned LUDWIG LOEWE ARMS COMPANY of BERLIN, which from 1887 onward was actually part owner of Mauser Waffenfabrik.

This rifle was initially slated for delivery to the Orange Free State in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Often mistakenly called “Model 1895”, these are mechanically the Model 1893, because they have a square-bottom bolt and don’t have the Chilean Model 1895-style third locking lug. The site is not associated with Century Arms or Canik, is not an authorized seller of factory original Canik products, does not hold a Federal Firearms License. The no-prefix Model 1893s were some of the first produced after Ludwig Loewe was merged into DWM in 1897. ALERT - It has come to our attention that a fraudulent internet site is misusing the Canik name, trademarks, images and products in what we assume is a scheme to defraud unsuspecting firearm and accessory purchasers. Matching number on cleaning rod, triggerguard, and floorplate, but not the bolt. A later-style russet leather sling is included. (See photos.) The stock shows a faint cartouche. The rifle’s wood and metal show only light service wear. Cleaning rod is present and number-matching! Bore is bright, with sharp rifling. Chilean crest is intact on receiver ring. This rifle likely started out with a straight bolt, but was retrofitted with a cavalry-syle bolt.

Bolt serial numbers mismatched to receiver-typical of early rifles that went back to the Chilean for arsenal re-build. The Carabineros covered much of the rugged and remote countryside by horseback, and the side. The guns were provided to the Carabineros de Chile, a military styled investigative police force under the Ministry of the Interior. Near excellent overall condition with 98%+ original arsenal blue–except on the butplate. In 1935, Mauser Oberndorf was contracted by the government of Chile to build 10,000 new carbines.
